UGM Students Earn Doctorates After Researching the Effects of Transformational Leadership

Bali Tourism – Leadership is a major contextual factor that influences creativity.

However, transformational leadership emphasizes the direct influence of the leader on its members individually because a transformational leader can behave differently for each member.

So that it affects individual creativity, either directly or indirectly through mediating identification of the work group.

This was stated by Student of Doctoral Program in Management Science, Faculty of Economics and Business, Sidum Trio Indarto, SE, MA, in his doctoral promotion open examination, Wednesday (27/1/2021).

In the dissertation entitled The Influence of Transformational Leadership on Group Creativity and Individual Creativity: Multi-Level Approach, Promovendus conducted research involving 497 respondents with 397 questionnaires filled out by team members, 63 questionnaires filled out by team leaders, and 37 questionnaires filled out by superiors of team leaders.

“The questionnaire used for data processing came from 63 teams. The analysis of this research uses a multilevel approach with single-level and cross-level models, “he said.

Research that uses a variable-based mediation mechanism is identified to understand how leadership influences employee creativity and innovation.

Identification-based mediation mechanisms are important for understanding the influence of leadership on creativity because they are another form of motivational mechanism derived from self-conception theory, role identity theory, and relationship identification concepts.

The results of the study concluded that the effect of transformational leadership can be differentiated at the group and individual levels.

The components of ideal influence and components of inspirational motivation that make up transformational leadership focus on group influence at the group and individual levels, while the components of intellectual stimulation and the components of individual consideration that make up transformational leadership focus on individual influence at the individual level.

“This study reinforces the findings of several studies that have been conducted in other countries which have found that transformational leadership is an individual and group phenomenon so that its effects can occur at the individual and group level,” he said.

He added that the effect of transformational leadership occurs across levels.

Transformational leadership that focuses on groups affects individual creativity, both directly and indirectly through mediating identification of the work group.

Meanwhile, identification of work groups mediates the effect of group-focused transformational leadership on individual creativity.
