Sukirno and his family were hit by hot clouds of Merapi when they came to a wedding reception.

Bali Tourism – The cloud is hanging over Tunggularum hamlet, Wonokerto village, Turi, Sleman, to be precise in the Tunggularum bunker. The warmth of the sun hindered the clouds. Not to mention the big trees that stand tall add to the cool atmosphere.

The Tunggularum Bunker or Emergency Protection Room is one of the emergency shelters for residents, especially on the slopes of Mount Merapi which is still active today. The use of this bunker itself is to protect residents from hot clouds during the eruption of Mount Merapi.

Not far from the Tunggularum Bunker, a man can be seen coming out of a simple house behind a shady tree. The hat is already on the man’s head, his trouser suit with an orange long-sleeved shirt that reads BPBD DIY on the right are also neatly worn.

His name is Sukirno. This 65-year-old man from Tunggularum Hamlet, Wonokerto Village, Turi, Sleman has been given the task of guarding the Tunggularum bunker some time ago. Not without reason, Sukirno’s residence, which is not far from the bunker and his experience of living side by side with Merapi, is a separate consideration.

How could I not, Sukirno, in fact, had already tasted the bitter sweetness to the ferocity of Mount Merapi. Especially in the eruption of Mount Merapi which occurred about 27 years ago or to be precise on November 22, 1994.

“At that time all the families died. There were wives, two children, and parents, all died. I lost five family members. I remember coming to the reception on November 22, 1994,” said Sukirno when he was met in the bunker or emergency shelter. Tunggularum, Saturday (30/1/2021).

This heartbreaking story happened when Sukirno was 26 years old. While lighting a cigarette in his hand and then smoking it, he continues his story. Sukirno was silent for a moment while remembering the incident.

Sukirno said that shortly before the eruption of Merapi in 1994, there were already signs that Mount Merapi was about to erupt. Around 07.00 WIB in the morning the heat can be felt.

Then followed by volcanic ash that had come out of the peak of Merapi at around 11.00 WIB for a few minutes. Sukirno did not deny that early warning had already existed.
