The plate dance is one of the identities of West Sumatra. As a way to worship a god who is a cultural heritage.

The plate dance from West Sumatra (West Sumatra) is not only used as a tourism promotion event or cultural event performer. There is a history and meaning of this dance.

But since Islam entered West Sumatra, the ritual offerings with the plate dance were diverted, not destroyed. The plate dance is not a means of worshiping gods, but is used for Minang cultural parties or events. Such as the coronation of pengulu, coronation of approach titles, birth ceremonies, weddings, inaugurations, welcoming guests and other cultural events.

The plate dance has been around for centuries. It is estimated that the plate dance has existed since 800 years ago.

The movements of the plate dance are very excited. The dancers place two plates on the palms of their hands and then swing them rapidly with a firm motion based on the rhythm or beat. Dancers usually use the rings on their fingers to make plates clink to accompany their lively movements.

At the end of the dance, usually the dancer will break the plate by kneading it in the palm of the hand. Then they will dance on the broken plate. But, there are also creations of plate dancers moving jumping and dancing on shards while swinging plates.

The plate dance movements include the movement of pasambah, singanjuo negligent, hoeing, digging, removing trash, fencing, sowing, pulling seeds, planting movements, relieving fatigue, moving juadah, motion picking rice, raking rice, aerating rice, filing rice, carrying rice, pounding rice, mutual cooperation, crushing rice and stepping on broken glass.

The plate dance is usually played with an odd number of dancers, consisting of three to seven people. The dance is accompanied by a combination of talempong and saluang musical instruments. The tempo of the music was soft and regular at first, but over time it changed more rapidly.

Different areas in Minangkabau, different movements, you know. Usually, dance movements are influenced by geographical conditions. So, the difference is only in the form of presentation and use of plates, dancing using dinner plates or small plates. But, that difference does not affect the function of the plate dance.

Over time, the plate dance began to be created so that it was unsightly. Likewise with the music to the dancers’ clothes. Usually, the big dance studios in West Sumatra are doing these creations.

So a traveler, don’t be surprised, if you see a plate dance staged with different movements, plates, and dancer clothes at every opportunity.
